President Updates on A Path Forward — Together

"It is time to consider the future of this initiative while also remaining focused on fulfilling the intent behind its creation," he said

President G.P. “Bud” Peterson sent a message to leadership yesterday, outlining the progress that has been made in addressing institutional issues clustered around academics, student and community life, and health and well-being.

Over the past two years, a dedicated group of individuals has collected and focused input from students, faculty, and staff on ways to enhance campus environment. Both the input and the resulting objectives were at the center of the initiative known as A Path Forward — Together.

“It is time to consider the future of this initiative while also remaining focused on fulfilling the intent behind its creation,” he said. “I’m pleased to report that more than 60% [of the objectives] have been resolved: either completed or, upon additional study, considered closed due to prohibitive costs or other institutional limitations.

“Those achievements include increased academic flexibility through mini-mesters and a revised grade substitution policy; expanded facilities for our LGBTQIA Resource Center and more gender-inclusive restrooms; and additional staff and programming in support of student mental health, exemplified by our new Center for Assessment, Referral, and Education (CARE).”

He went on to announce that the formal structure for A Path Forward — Together would be disbanded but would not alter the Institute’s commitment to the remaining objectives. Each unfinished objective has assigned leads who have responsibility for maintaining momentum. Leads are expected to provide updates during the next reporting period in November.

“The campus commitment to A Path Forward — Together has underscored the resilience of our institution and its people,” Peterson concluded. “At the same time, we must anticipate and ensure we are providing what our students need to succeed, both during their time on campus and post-graduation. This continued effort will bring us closer to fulfilling the Institute’s commitment to an inclusive, safe, and healthy community.”
