Georgia Tech’s student newspaper, the Technique, won five awards for journalism excellence in the annual Georgia College Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.

Entries were categorized as Group 1 (for work by freshmen and sophomores) and Group 2 (for work by juniors and seniors).

  • First Place: Best Photograph, News (Continuing the Conversation) — Casey Gomez
  • Second Place: Best Sports Story, Group 2 (Rugby) — Harsha Sridhar
  • Third Place: Best Sports Story, Group 1 (Thrillerdome) — John Edwards
  • Third Place: Best Campus Community Service, Editorial — Staff
  • Third Place: Best Campus Community Service, Sports — Staff

“The Technique staff has done a stellar job over this past academic year, and I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished,” said Samira Bandaru, editor-in-chief of the Technique. “We have had some new people in new positions on staff and have seen immense growth from our editors over the past semester.”

Bandaru said that while awards are a great confidence booster, the most gratifying experience is seeing the physical publication of the newspaper after working tirelessly each week to publish quality content.

“The Technique is a tight-knit community and we enjoy each other’s company, making the work we do just a little bit easier,” Bandaru said.

Mac Pitts, director of the Office of Student Media, said, “It truly is a great honor for the Technique, as a student newspaper, to be recognized annually for the high quality of work they produce. To win awards over other schools in Georgia that have large journalism programs is a true testament to the caliber of students we work with every day.”
