After a national search, Georgia Institute of Technology has selected Ling-Ling Nie as its new general counsel and vice president for Ethics and Compliance. She joins Georgia Tech from Panasonic Corporation of North America, where she serves as chief compliance officer and assistant general counsel.

Nie has worked with Panasonic since 2012 and is responsible for managing the corporate compliance and ethics program for more than 25 subsidiaries and division companies. Her work at Panasonic focuses on global compliance matters including antitrust, anti-corruption, investigations, data protection, customs and trade, conflict minerals, and privacy issues.

At Georgia Tech, Nie will provide leadership, oversight, and direction in the areas of ethics, compliance, legal affairs, affiliated organizations, and risk management for the Institute. She will provide decision support to the Office of the President on these and related matters including policy interpretation and formation to ensure that the Institute maintains a consistently high level of integrity and public trust. This past summer, the position was expanded and now reports directly to Georgia Tech’s president.

Nie has practiced in both the private and public sectors in multiple areas. Her experience includes five years at the U.S. Department of Treasury, serving as senior advisor to the general counsel at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. She also served as United States Mint’s legal counsel and deputy agency ethics official. A public speaker, she has talked with corporate, government, civic, education, and professional groups on ethics, diversity, and women’s leadership.

“The combination of Ling-Ling Nie’s legal and compliance leadership experience in business and government and her thought leadership in ethical standards uniquely qualify her for this newly expanded role at Georgia Tech,” said Georgia Tech President G.P. “Bud” Peterson. “We look forward to partnering with her as we continue to enhance the ethical culture and clarify expectations across the Institute.”

Nie is a graduate of the University of Georgia and Washington and Lee University’s School of Law. At Panasonic, she is a division president of the Women Connect organization and serves as a global mentor for the Sport Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA). In July 2018, she spoke at the United Nations in Geneva on the importance of diversity in leadership as part of her involvement with SIGA. She received the Excellence in Ethics Training and Communications Award from the U.S. Office of Government Ethics in 2010 and was a University of Georgia 40 Under 40 award program nominee in 2013 and 2018. Nie regularly speaks at events hosted by the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics, the Association of Corporate Counsel, the Ethisphere Institute, the University of Georgia School of Law, and Seton Hall School of Law. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Lawyers for the Arts and the Actor’s Express Theatre in Atlanta, and is an avid mountain biker. She will assume her new role at Georgia Tech next month.

“I am thrilled to join Georgia Tech, an organization that is a pioneer in so many ways in the academic, business, and civic communities,” said Nie. “I am excited about the opportunity to apply my background in industry and government to champion Georgia Tech’s commitment to Institute-wide integrity.”

The search committee for the general counsel and vice president for Ethics and Compliance included Georgia Tech faculty, staff, and a student leader, along with the University System of Georgia Vice Chancellor of Legal Affairs Edward Tate. It was chaired by Lynn Durham, associate vice president and chief of staff, Office of the President.

“We are grateful to the members of the search committee for their time and expertise in serving on the team to select this strategic leader for Georgia Tech,” said Peterson. “In addition, we are especially grateful to Aisha Oliver-Staley for leading Ethics, Compliance, and Legal Affairs as the interim vice president over the past few months. She has done an outstanding job.”
