Excitement for Super Bowl LIII has swept across Atlanta this week.

With the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots set to face off Sunday, the host city and the NFL have been teaming up to provide fans — both local and visiting — with opportunities to experience Atlanta and all it has to offer. As part of the effort to showcase local talent, two Super Bowl events will feature the Georgia Tech Pep Band.

On Saturday, Feb. 2, collections of about 30 band members will be playing at two different events in the city. One group will be at the NFL Honors red carpet at the Fox Theatre, while another will play before both teams’ pep rallies as part of the Super Bowl LIVE concert series in Centennial Olympic Park.

According to Chris Moore, director of athletic bands at Tech, the pep band received an invitation to participate in these events from Brett Daniels, the chief operating officer for the Host Committee. Daniels, who previously served as Tech’s deputy athletic director, introduced Moore to producers from both Super Bowl LIVE and the NFL Network, and everything came together from there.

"This is a great opportunity for our band to participate in the pageantry of one of the largest sporting events in the world," Moore said. "We are honored to have been chosen to share the stage not only with the teams, but also the incredible talent that Jermaine Dupri has assembled for Super Bowl LIVE. We are also looking forward to welcoming the NFL players, coaches, officials, and celebrities on the red carpet at the NFL Honors event at the Fox Theatre.”

The last time the band performed at this level was during pregame festivities at Super Bowl XXXV, held in the Georgia Dome in 2001.

While the NFL Honors ceremony is invite-only, the Super Bowl LIVE performances are free to the public and will take place at 12:30 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. The Georgia Tech Drumline will also appear during the second show. The full Super Bowl LIVE lineup can be found here.
