8 Clubs to Join This Summer

Summer can be a perfect time to try something new or learn about a new student group when campus is less populated and you may have more free time.

With summer almost half over and temperatures climbing, mid-June can feel like the doldrums. Life is still happening on campus, though, and there are plenty of student clubs that aren’t on vacation.

Summer is a perfect time to try something new — when campus is less populated and you find you have some free time. Student organizations active on campus this summer include:

Molecular Gastronomists

If you love science and food, check out Molecular Gastronomists. On Friday, June 29, stop by to make instant ice cream and learn more about the club, or visit their Facebook or Orgsync page.

Circle K

Circle K is a service-oriented group that is volunteering at the Atlanta Community Food Bank every week this summer, as well as planting trees with Trees Atlanta in July. Learn more at gtcirclek.weebly.com, where you can also join a GroupMe to sign up for events.

Bhakti Yoga

This yoga group holds weekly sessions on Fridays at 7 p.m. in the Student Center’s Piedmont Room, and it will host a lecture on “Real Happiness in an Unnatural World” on July 6. Members also volunteer on Saturdays in an effort called Food for Life, where they cook and distribute food to homeless people in Atlanta. Follow the group on Orgsync or Facebook.

Musician’s Network

Musician's Network meets at Under the Couch every other Monday at 7 p.m., starting Monday, June 18. Practice fees are discounted to $5 for the summer semester (from $15 normally), which lets students reserve the practice room, stage, and equipment for themselves or a group. Musician’s Network is also hosting open mic nights every Thursday at 8 p.m. at Under the Couch, and Buzzbeats will perform their Legends Beatbox Battle event on June 30 and July 1. On July 21, password:password, a band of Tech students, and HANIWA, a touring band from Oklahoma, will perform. Keep up with all the activities at gtmn.org or on Facebook or Instagram.

Sailing Club

You don’t have to know the difference between port and starboard to enjoy an afternoon with the Sailing Club, which holds races on Wednesdays this summer at Lake Lanier. The group recently hosted a summer barbecue for interested new members, welcoming more than 40 attendees, but it’s not too late to get involved. The Sailing Club is planning a summer beach trip and will have six new boats later this month for its use. The group meets Mondays at 7:30 p.m. in the Campus Recreation Center. Learn more at gtsailing.org, on Facebook, or contact the group.

Gamers Guild

The Gamers Guild hosts weekly meetups to play board and tabletop role-playing games. No experience is required. The group meets Sundays at 3 p.m. in the Student Center dining area on the first floor.

Student Alumni Association (SAA)

SAA is hosting multiple summer events, including a golf clinic and Traditions 101, and its marketing committee is actively seeking new members. The marketing committee meets at 6 p.m. at the Alumni House. Joining SAA is $10 for the year, $5 of which goes directly back to student-related projects through the Gift to Tech program.

DramaTech

Though there aren’t any open auditions right now, DramaTech is running shows all summer. The troupe will soon open In a Word, a show where “grief and comedy collide” and “ordinary turns of phrase take on dangerous new meaning.” Let’s Try This! Improv workshops also run on Saturdays through the summer. Learn more at dramatech.org or on Facebook.
