Students Have New Options for Printing on Campus

The Office of Information Technology offers students more options for printing on campus.

As an on-campus student, you’ll likely need to print on campus. With more than 70 printers available in some 45 locations, you have plenty of options.

In March, the Office of Information Technology upgraded its printing system, Pharos, and added the convenience of printing from mobile devices as well as from multiple print stations around campus. All students, both new and returning, must create a new account if printing for the first time since the March upgrade. To create an account, simply swipe your BuzzCard at any print release station. Once your account has been created, you can use your weekly allocation of $2.20 to print using one of the following options.

Printing from a Lab or Cluster

When printing from one of the desktops in the Library Commons, or from a lab or cluster, select the name of the printer from the Print dialog box, make any print configuration changes such as paper size or number of pages, then go to a print release station located nearby. Swipe your BuzzCard to release the job. Your job will remain in the printer queue for two hours before it’s deleted.

Using Your Mobile Device

You can print using your mobile device (phone or tablet) by sending the print job as an attachment from your email address. First, you’ll need to register the email account or accounts you’ll be using by swiping your BuzzCard at a print release station. Once your address is registered, all you need to do is send your job to print@gatech.edu for black-and-white double-sided printouts; printblack@gatech.edu for black-and-white single-sided printouts, and printcolor@gatech.edu for color single-sided printouts. You can release your print job from My Print Center (myprintcenter.gatech.edu) or from a print release station located on campus after swiping your BuzzCard. Please note that you must be on a campus network (VPN, GTWifi, etc.) to use mobile printing features.

Using Your Personal Laptop or Desktop

You can print from your laptop or desktop as long as you’re connected to the campus network. You’ll need to download the Pharos software and drivers, and select the type of print job (black-and-white, color, stapled, etc.) and the printer you want to use. You’ll have up to two hours to retrieve your job from a print release station before it’s deleted from the print queue. To access the printing software and print locations, go to www.software.oit.gatech.edu. For detailed instructions on printing from your laptop or desktop, refer to the FAQ at https://faq.oit.gatech.edu/content/how-do-i-use-student-oit-laptop-printing.

Using the Web Portal

If you’re on the campus network (LAWN, VPN, etc.), you can upload any print job to the Pharos print center portal, My Print Center (https://myprintcenter.gatech.edu), and select the campus printer you’d like to use. Choose this option when you don’t want to download any client software or print drivers, or when you’d like to select print settings for files sent from your mobile device. Your job will remain in the printer queue for two hours before it’s deleted.

Printing Bulk Documents

If you need to print a large quantity of documents, it is recommended that you send the job to Central Printing Services. They print large jobs and deliver to bins located on the second floor of the Student Center, organized by last name and first initial. Deliveries are made three times a day, except on Saturday and Sunday. Every student is given a quota of 1,200 pages per semester for bulk printing. Just make sure you’re following copyright compliance for printing materials. To use Central Printing Services, go to https://central-ps.gatech.edu. For additional information, refer to the FAQ on Central Printing Services at https://faq.oit.gatech.edu/content/how-do-i-print-any-device.
