Three years after the initial implementation of the Jacket Guardian safety service on campus, it’s been revamped and updated to offer new features for keeping the Tech community safe: The Jacket Guardian service is now a free downloadable app called Rave Guardian.

The free app is designed to turn a mobile phone into a personal safety device during an emergency situation. It is equipped with numerous features that enhance responsiveness by providing 911 operators, police, and emergency medical services with user information, such as location via GPS, that is critical during an emergency.

“Having the Rave Guardian app is like having a blue light emergency telephone in your pocket,” said Captain Randy Barrone, who oversees the Georgia Tech Police Department (GTPD) Crime Prevention Unit. “After installing the app, you can create your own personal safety profile. You can also upload a photo of yourself, medical conditions, information about your vehicle, and other pertinent information, which is only released to emergency responders in the event that help is needed. Plus, you can call for help with the simple tap of a button.” The app also lets users text anonymous crime tips and photos to GTPD.

Like the previous version, the app is especially useful when working or studying on campus late at night or very early in the morning. The user can set a timer specifying how long it will take to get from one place to another. If the user doesn’t deactivate it upon expiration of the timer, the user-specified guardians (on-campus friends and co-workers or off-campus family members, for instance) and police are automatically notified. And the GPS feature enables responders to locate the user to ensure his or her safety.

After December 21, 2014, the former Jacket Guardian service will no longer be available and users will need to register with the new Rave Guardian safety service. To sign up, users must download the free app from the iTunes or Google Play store and register with their Georgia Tech email address. After registering, a new safety profile must be created to enable use of the enhanced safety features.
